Dave Van Ronk has had to cancel all concert performances for the rest of the 2001, due to the diagnosis on October 23rd of colon cancer. He was scheduled for surgery Wed, October 31st. He has insurance to cover the surgery, but not prescriptions. Contributions welcome at:

Publishing News

Neil Gaiman's American Gods was #1 hardcover bestseller on the October LOCUS list and on the Amazon.com list reported in same issue. Gaiman's Smoke And Mirrors was also #5 on the LOCUS trade pb bestseller list.

Same issue of LOCUS reports American Gods hit New York Times bestseller lists for July 8 through 29 (as high as #10), Publisher's Weekly for July 2 through 16 (as high as #9), and Washington Post for July 8th and 15th (as high as 7th).

Steven Brust's Issola was #3 on the LOCUS hardcover bestseller list and #5 on the Waldenbooks list.

Lois McMaster Bujold's Curse Of Chalion was #5 on the Barnes & Noble/B. Dalton hardcover bestseller list.

Local U of MN Ph.D. candidate Eric Drown was the co-winner of the 2001 SFRA Graduate Student Paper Award for his "Riding the Cosmic Express in the Age of Mass Production: Independent Inventors as Pulp Heroes in American SF 1926-1939"
