Badger Training Notes

Thank you for helping us run Minicon!

Job Description:

Badgers sit at an assigned spot and verify that the people passing are convention members. Convention members have a member badge, just like you. Job title badges are not member badges. Shifts are one to two hours and there is usually a place to sit. This is a good job for a new person because it is easy and it is a way to meet people.

Procedure

    1. Check in with the person in charge of the area where you are assigned. Tell the person in charge how long you have agreed to be there.
    2. Watch for badges. Ask to see the badge if it is not visible. Always be polite.
    3. Tell the person in charge of the area or a Minicon Ranger if there is a problem.
    4. Remind the person in charge about ten minutes before your shift ends.

Special Issues

Who can make exceptions?

There is always someone in charge of the area who has the power to make exceptions. In addition, Rangers, Operations Sub-Heads and Heads, the Heads and Sub-Heads of our Hotel department, and the Minicon 33 Exec all have the authority to make exceptions or change procedures. Any Committee member can help if you have a problem. Radisson Management and Security personnel always have permission to enter an area.

What if someone without a badge tries to get past you?

Tell them, "No," but don’t try to physically restrain them. Get a good description, and get the attention of a Committee member, a Ranger, or the person in charge of the area. If you need help, ask someone with a badge to tell the person in charge or a Ranger you need help. Explain the details when you get help.

What if someone claims to be a Minicon Guest and has no badge?

Tell the person you are not supposed to let people in without badges, but you will send for someone in charge of the area who has the authority to make an exception.

What about people with movement disabilities?

If it would be an obvious courtesy to make an exception, get the attention of someone who can make an exception.

Rudeness and Courtesy

Be polite. If someone is not polite to you, make a note of the badge number and tell one of the Rangers.
