M33

Some of you may be wondering what the pictures on these various pages are about. Yes, astronomy has a long-standing connection to science fiction fandom, but there's more to it than that.

In the 18th Century, French astronomer Charles Messier compiled a catalog of diffuse objects often mistaken for comets. He assigned a number to each object as he cataloged it. This turned out to be the first good catalog of deep-sky objects, and his catalog numbers are still in use to identify these objects.

Messier object 33, or M33 as it's often abbreviated, is the Pinwheel galaxy in Triangulum.
