ReinCONation 6 -- Progress Report 2
October 18-20, 1996
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Welcome to ReinCONation!
Our Honored Guests:
Spider & Jeanne Robinson
Writers, Musicians, and Party Animals
Jan Bogstad
Co-founder of Wiscon and JANUS
Guests of Honor
ReinCONation 6 is pleased to welcome Spider and Jeanne Robinson
and Jan Bogstad as our Guests of Honor in 1996.
Spider has been writing science fiction for over 20 years, and
is the
creator of the popular "Callahan's Bar" series, as well as novels such as
Mindkiller and Telempath. He and Jeanne, a
former dancer and choreographer, have collaborated on the Stardance
series. They both sing wonderfully and Spider plays a mean guitar.
Jan has been involved in Madison fandom since its beginnings in
the
mid-70's, helped start Wiscon,
and co-edited JANUS. More recently, she attended the
International Women's
Conference in Beijing last year. She was
the director of the Science Fiction Research Association (SFRA) annual
conference this year.
Parties
We are planning a ConSuite with elements you've come to know and
appreciate:
- food
- being asked to help tidy up
- soft beverages
- conscription into the tidying up process
- a beer of some kind
- tidying up duties being assigned to you
- the continuing search for a drink that ReinCONation can call its own
- oh, did we mention being asked to tidy up?
Like last year, there will be several hosts throughout the day, and many
of the same faces from last year. There may even be a new one or two.
We have a couple of surprises. We're expecting Roscoe. That's all we can
say right now, but be on the lookout for him. And good munchies...
REALLY good munchies... will be available in the
consuite late night on
either Friday or Saturday. Perhaps both. What kind? You'll have to stop
by and see. But we're hoping for a VERY pleasant surprise.
As with last year, your Parties Head-Hosts are Betsy and Ishmael. If you
like the ConSuite, please be sure to let them know. If you didn't like
it, please be sure to let them know what could have been better. And
lastly, as with last year, there will be a bit of a recurring theme. So
watch for it!
Program
No one (save participants) has to go to Programming at
ReinCONation, but
you'll have a lot of fun when you do! We're continuing ReinCONation's
creative mix of serious and playful programming. We want you to be
stimulated and entertained and inspired to continue the discussion in
the ConSuite.
Scheduled events include:
- Readings by Jan Bogstad, Spider Robinson, and Jeanne Robinson
- A concert by Spider, including songs from Callahan's
- A slide show/talk by Jan about her visit to China
- The 4th Annual ReinCONation Cabaret
- Panels on "The Early History of Minicon", "Gender and Identity in
Cyberspace Fiction," and "What's the Coolest Thing You've
Encountered Lately?"
To volunteer for panels, call Eric (612-825-9353), or Margo
(612-825-6549).
Art Show & Dealers' Room
Now that we're back at the Radisson, we have plenty of space. In fact,
there's still room available for dealers to reserve tables and artists to
plan to hang art in the art show. Interested folks should contact
Giovanna
Fregni by mail (2402 University Avenue, Suite 504, St. Paul MN 55114) or
phone (612-646-6518). Artists, please note that we are unable to handle
mail-in art.
TACKY TACKY TACKY
Our local area Artists Support Group is proud to announce the First
Original Tacky Art Exhibit. You won't believe your eyes! At this very
moment, famous and infamous fannish artists are slaving away on astounding
works of art which they hope will bring convention art show standards to a
new low. Black velvet? You bet!
Hotel
In response to requests from last year's attendees,
ReinCONation returns to the Radisson South, home of ReinCONations 1-3 as
well as all Minicons since 1985. The Radisson South,
near the intersection of Interstate 494 and Highway 100, features a pool,
bar, fitness room, free parking, two restaurants, and is close to the
highly-rated restaurants of the Hotel Sofitel. Our con suite will be on
the 22nd floor, prompting various funny animals to remark to each other,
"Rather inspiring view of the 494 Strip, isn't it?" <insert KenFletch
cartoon here>
Room rates are $99 per night, single or double. To reserve a room, call
the Radisson South at
612-835-7800 or 800-333-3333, and be sure to mention ReinCONation.
