Publishing News

Ruth Berman, poem, "Star Spears," in Analog, March 2000 issue.

Cetaganda by Lois McMaster Bujold & The Reader's Chair, was named one of the "Best Audiobooks of 1999" out of a total of 24 chosen, by Library Journal [2/15/00 issue].

Minnesota Book Awards will be anounced 14 April; the only sf title nominated in the new "Popular Fiction" category (along with four mysteries—previously sf and mysteries each had its own award) is A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold.

Two Eleanor Arnason stories will be in forthcoming Year's Best collections: her The Grammarian's Five Daughters in the Datlow/Windling Fantasy and Horror annual and her Dapple in the Dozois Science Fiction annual.

The 1999 Preliminary Nebula Ballot (the long one) includes "Sky Eyes" by Laurel Winter on the Novelette list (one of eighteen); final ballot (with top five in each category) to be released 15 April.

1999 "Recommended Reading List" in the February Locus includes Bujold's A Civil Campaign (sf novels), Peg Kerr's The Wild Swans (fantasy novels – this list also included The Sub, which is set in Minnesota and is by long-ago former Minnesotan Thomas M. Disch); Dark Detectives ed. Stephen Jones from local publisher Fedogan & Bremer (anthologies); Amano & Gaiman's The Sandman: The Dream Hunters (art); The Actors by Eleanor Arnason (novellas); Dapple: A Hwarhath Historical Romance and Stellar Harvest, both by Eleanor Arnason (novelettes); Otherness by Phillip C. Jennings (short stories); and Democritus' Violin by G. David Nordley.

Locus Bestsellers list in the Feb. 2000 issue includes A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold (hardcover tied for #9) and Dragon by Steven Brust (#1 paperback). Dragon was also #6 paperback on the Barnes & Noble/B. Dalton list in the same issue.
