Matt Strait typed up these minutes from a paper copy in 2020. No OCR was involved. Original errors, if any, are lovingly retained, and marked with [sic] when I noticed them. Other content in square brackets are likewise transcription notes. Additional errors may have been introduced. Original errors may have been inadvertently corrected. Below the second line of equal signs below is an abbreviated version of the minutes that we displayed online for a long time prior to 2020. Matt doesn't know exactly where they came from, maybe RUNE? The long version (between the two rows of equal signs) is the official version, but the short version is retained in case it is useful somehow. ================================================================================ Minn-STF Board of Directors -- 1988/1989 year, meeting 5 -- 8 Aug 88 meeting at Bailey/Bratton home // 7:45 pm start Present: Board--Bailey, Cargo, Ihinger, Johnson. Sullivan Others--Lien (recording secretary), M Richards (Einblatt) Agenda: Answering Machine; Fallcon; TotU; RUNE; Board By-Laws Work Session; Paper Folder; Minn-STF/Minicon Group Dynamics; Printer Repair; Lecture Series; Mailing List; Margo report; New Checks; Minicon $; Festival of the Book; Treasury Deposits ********************************************************************* Announcements: professional sales by Peg Ihinger to AMAZING and by Kij Johnson to TWILIGHT ZONE; political career of local fan; upcoming stay at Toad Hall by touring DUFF winner Terry Dowling. TotU (Lien): Issue number 4 will be picked by [sic] from printers within 48 hours. Noted that Minicon has paid the TotU account for sales at the Sales Table thereat. Lecture Series: Reported acceptances from CJ Cherryh and John M. Ford. RUNE (Cargo): It's out. Comments heard by those present to date have ranged from "impressive" to "a gross misappropriation of funds justifying impeachment for the Board that authorized it." There would not seem to be a consensus. Next issue expected in about a month. Answering Machine (Lien, for Garey): Nothing yet found within budget and specified requirements. Will keep looking, but not optomistic [sic]. Minn-STF Hotline (Richards): Was out of service for one or more days due to cutoff of telephone service (unpaid bill??). Now back. Margo Report (Bailey): Latest doctor word is that "she looks fine on paper." She does not, however, feel fine on hospital linen and will continue to welcome calls and visitors, though she tires easily. Mailing List (Cargo): Is in "good shape" for Fallcon and is "almost suitable" for RUNE/Minicon uses now. There were 2,032 RUNEs mailed domestically ; circa 125 mailed to Canada or other foreign; circa 300 left over (preliminary estimate of 2500 needed turning out a little high). The set of names to receive Minicon 24 Progress Report 1 is just under 4,000. There are about 500 newly input names in list. On related matter, Cargo read a complaint from a Minn-STF member who had received an unrequested copy of RIVERSIDE QUARTERLY with name seemingly acquired from a Minn-STF Directory. Much discussion: how did editor get same? Was his use of it "wrong" or standard fannish procedure, especially given that there is no indication on the directory as to what uses are permitted/forbidden? Noted that members could request names be removed from Directory, and some had done so. Cargo agreed to contact RQ editor to pass along the complaint and try to find out how he got Directory; also to contact complaintant [sic]. Board will need to decide before next Directory (mailed with Einblatt in Nov) what, if anything, needs to be added as fair use guidelines to the Directory. Possibilities include (are not limited to): no restrictions; fannish/nonprofit mailings only; one-to-one use only (no mass use, even for free fanzines or such); use restricted only to those people listed on Directory itself. Straw vote: was RQ use of Directory to send out free copies wrong?: split as one Yes, one Not Sure and three No. ((Followup: Sherlock Secretary, acting on a hunch, tracked to ground a malefactor who admitted having sent RQ editor a copy of Directory with a few names marked in response to a request from him for suggestions as to locals who might appreciate receiving a free copy. Malefactor obviously guessed wrong in case of complaintant. Secretary confesses to vast bemusement at whole hoohah, having heard often enough how fandom started in the first place when one prozine started publishing letterhack addresses and other vile protofen were sleazy enough to actually use them for contact. Personal aside now ends, as we return you outside the parentheses to your previously scheduled, nominally objective Board minutes.)) New Checks (Richards): Reported that our new checks have correct new addresses except for wrong ZIP code. We will use them and make manual corrections rather than junk them and start over. Board By-Laws Work Session 2: at Karen Johnson's on 13 August, 2:30. KJ will supply salad; bring anything else you wish to eat/drink while the Ministry of Truth is in session. Sullivan displayed unearthed copy of what seems to be original, pre-incorporation Minn-STF consitution [sic]; she will attempt to copy. It's on faded ditto; suggest we keep it under a pyramid-shaped beanie to preserve it. Paper Folder (Cargo) and Printer Repair (Cargo): No action yet. Fallcon (Bailey): Oct 21-23 at the Seville. Big hotel will small rooms; they are not willing to hold block so attendees are requested to request to be near each other of us [sic]. More information out soon. Group Dynamics: Informal discussion with some Exec members indicated little or no interest in last month's proposal. Tabled. Minicon $: Rates of $15 advance/ $30 at door have been set. Festival of the Book on 10 September: Does Minn-STF want to involve itself on short notice? Apparently not much; but E Heideman is authorized to tell them about our Lecture Series and such. Treasury Checks: some complaints that checks made out to Minn-STF have not been cashed promptly, or even semi-promptly. Bailey will pass along Board's concern at this to Treasurer. Next meeting not set then, but was set at By-Laws session, for 15 September 88 at 7:30 at Bailey/Bratton again. Meeting adjourned around 9:45 pm; a mere two hours. **************************************************************** Board had requested Secretary print an innocent but bawdy-sounding exchange which occured [sic], but as it happens, minutes of this meeting sans[underlined] this exchange took up just enough space to fill two pages and it would be a shame to increase photocopy costs and kill trees just for the same of a cheap laugh [handwriting: "(at my expense)"] as I'm sure all will agree, d'accord[underlined]? [handwritten:] 14 Sept 88 [signed:] Denny Lien Denny Lien ================================================================================ August 8, 1988 Announcements included professional sales (Peg Ihinger and Kij Johnson), DUFF winner Terry Dowling's forthcoming visit, TotU's release from the printer, acceptances from CJ Cherryh and John M. Ford for the lecture series, Margo's continued unhealth (improvement noted), answering machine shopping (ongoing), and even more. Comments on _Rune_ 78 ranged from "impressive" to "a gross misappropriation of funds justifying impeachment of the Board that authorized it". Next issue due in a month. The mailing list is ready for the fallcon and "almost suitable" for _Rune_/Minicon purposes. There was a report that a Minn-STF member received an unrequested copy of Riverside Quarterly and wondered why. This sparked a discussion of the proper uses of the Minn-STF mailing list, and a split straw vote about whether the fanzine editor's use of the directory was wrong. (Secretary confesses to vast amusement at whole hoohah, having heard often enough how fandom started in the first place when one prozine started publishing letterhack addresses and other vile protofen where sleazy enough to actually use them for contact.) New checks arrived with the correct new address, incorrect ZIP code. They will be used with manual corrections rather than reordered. A Board By-Laws Work Session was announced. Geri Sullivan displayed what seems to be an original, pre-incorporation Minn-STF constitution which she would try to copy. It's on faded ditto; suggest we keep it under a pyramid-shaped beanie to preserve it. A Fallcon report: Big hotel with small rooms, and unwilling to hold a block. Attendees are requested to request to be near each other of us. Minicon admission has been set at $15 in advance, $30 at the door. Board had requested Secretary print an innocent but bawdy-sounding exchange which occurred, but as it happens, minutes of this meeting sans this exchange took up just enough space to fill two pages and it would be a shame to increase photocopy costs and kill trees just for the sake of cheap laugh (at my expense) as I'm sure all will agree, d'accord?
