October 1, 1988 Minutes in Their Entirety! Meeting on the waterbed at Dean Gahlon/Laura Krentz home. Meeting called at short notice during the Minn-STF meeting at Dean and Laura's. Ihinger out of town; Johnson ill; everyone else seasick. Meeting commenced at 4:53 (as the tide went out). The only item of pressing business was _Rune_. The log of the Wayback Machine revealed: _Rune_: First issue under present editors -- 700 copies of 20 pp. budgeted at $975; actual costs were $800. Second issue: budgeted at $975; actual costs were $950. Third issue (to all Minicon attendees) 2500 copies of 52 pp. budgeted at $2500; spent so far $2400, with returns yet to be remailed and foreign-other-than Canada yet to go out. Upcoming: The first issue after the BIG ISSUE. It is noted that there is a major breakpoint at around 1,000 copies. The 2500 copies printed last time cost only about $400 more than 1,000 would. Since last year, cost of printing has gone up slightly; cost of postage has gone up noticeably; participation of _Rune_ recipients has gone up significantly. _Rune_ editors propose a _Rune_ with fewer copies, higher page count, and a budget "not a whole lot more" than previously suggested. They can do 700 copies of a 60 pp. _Rune_ for circa $1500 -- a possible Big Post-Minicon issue, such as this year's, being more. Still hope to do four per year. _Rune_ has been well received, and seems to have stimulated interest and fan publishing generally among locals. The budget available determines the page count, and thus the degree of editing needed, and thus needs to be determined in advance of production of upcoming issues. Discussion: Figures are reasonable, but: _Rune_ is the biggest single chunk of Minn-STF's budget, and "not a whole lot more" in _Rune_ terms still translates to a significant chunk of total pie. We are more concerned with annual cost than per-issue costs. _Rune_ can save by: cutting back on mailing list, cutting back on page count, or cutting back from 4 to 3 (or whatever) issues per year. How to define "core" list to receive (Einblatt list; Minicon minutes list; Directory list; all above plus letterwriters; plus -- ???). Annual $ available depends on Minicon profits. Consensus toward cutting per-year numbers to beef up per-issues: _Rune_ OKed for $1400 for upcoming issue; $1200 each for next two, these three and no more than three to come out in next 12 months. If more needed for special single issue, ask for more that issue. Answering machine: Romm has OKed purchase of such and will acquire upon receipt of check from Halpern (since done). ===================================================== "Hey, these Board meetings aren't held only to provide one-liners for the excerpts published in _Rune_, you know. Only mostly..." Play to your strengths. -- _Rune_ eds
